Little Emetle lives in the rural Eastern Cape town of Maclear. She suffers from biliary atresia. Biliary atresia is a condition that affects an infant’s liver. Bile normally flows from your baby’s liver to their small intestine. But with biliary atresia, your baby’s bile ducts (tubes that carry the bile) are blocked. So, bile builds up in their liver and damages it. Surgery improves bile flow, but most babies end up needing a liver transplant.

Once a month she had her mom makes the gruelling 850 km journey to Johannesburg to meet with her medical team at Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre, currently, this is the only Transplant Unit doing living donor liver transplantation in Southern Africa. The transplant team is currently doing all the necessary tests to see if her mom will be a suitable donor.

As a single parent, it is very stressful for the mom to cope financially with the monthly transport costs. Wings & Wishes is honoured to be part of Emetle’s journey, taking away some of the anxiety the family is experiencing.

We received the following message from her mom:

“Please note that I have received the tickets.  Thank you very very much! Ooooh words cannot really express how grateful I am. I don’t know what could I be without you guys. You always come to my rescue during difficult times.”
